Accessibility and Inclusivity in Digital Assessment

In the rapidly evolving landscape of digital education, accessibility and inclusion are paramount. As an organization, we recognize that accessibility in online assessment isn't just about compliance. It's about fair access, and about a test-taker's ability to actually demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Our commitment is to support partner institutions in delivering accessible, inclusive assessment with tools that reflect the diversity of our global user base and remove barriers to student success.

Building a foundation for accessible assessment

True accessibility goes beyond basic compliance. It addresses every barrier, social, geographic, financial, and cognitive, that could keep a test-taker from accessing an assessment or performing at their actual level. That has to be a consideration at every stage of the assessment lifecycle, not a feature bolted on afterward.

Assessment design. A mix of question types, multiple-choice, short answer, scenario-based, lets a lecturer assess a genuine range of skills, from recall to critical thinking, while clear, bias-free language gives every candidate an equal shot at showing what they know.

Preparation and information sharing. Briefing students on the format and the technology in advance, with a chance to try it before the real sitting, eases anxiety and surfaces access issues while there's still time to fix them.

Clear guidelines. Transparent expectations, word counts, expected duration, what "done" looks like, let students plan with confidence instead of guessing at the rules mid-exam.

Standardized, inclusive practices. Consistent templates and plain language mean an assessment is accessible on its own, without needing case-by-case modification, particularly for students completing it independently.

Accessible instruction and support. A designated contact available during assessment hours, and in the run-up to them, turns an access issue into a quick fix instead of a lost sitting.

Consistency in adjustments. Pre-agreed accommodations, extra time, submission flexibility, scheduling changes, have to carry over into the digital format exactly as agreed, every time, to keep the process fair and trusted.

Safe, ergonomic environments. Guidance on setting up a comfortable, well-managed study space matters most during longer or back-to-back assessment periods, when it's easy to overlook.

Accessibility features

Choosing an assessment tool means prioritizing a genuine suite of accessibility functionality, not a single checkbox setting. Ours includes:

• Text reader: converts written content to speech, for test-takers with visual impairments or reading disabilities.
• Adjustable text size: switch between regular and large text for visual comfort.
• Custom color schemes: invert colors or switch to monochrome to improve visibility and reduce visual strain.
• Resizable interface elements: pop-up windows and viewing modes that adjust to how a candidate wants to view content.
• Readable fonts: typefaces designed to aid candidates with visual impairments or dyslexia.
• Stop animation: a toggle that pauses moving content, for candidates sensitive to motion.
• Special considerations: adjustable integrity settings, timing, and breaks configured on a per-student basis.
