The Feedback Loop Most Institutions Skip

Summative assessment tells you what a cohort failed to learn, after the course has already ended. By the time a final exam's results come back, the moment to actually teach against a misunderstood concept has passed. The checks that would have caught it earlier almost always exist in theory. In practice, they're usually the first thing a busy lecturer drops.
El coste de instalación acaba con el hábito
The reason isn't that formative assessment doesn't work. It's that if a mid-term check needs an admin request and a scheduling slot, it doesn't get run. The tooling has to fit inside a lecturer's actual week, between lectures, without a ticket in the middle, or it quietly stops happening after the first few weeks of a term.
That's the gap formative assessment is supposed to close, and it's also exactly where most institutional tooling breaks down: it was built for the exams office, not for a lecturer deciding on a Tuesday afternoon that Thursday's class needs a five-question check.
A grade returned three weeks later is a verdict
The same comment, returned the day after a quiz, is teaching. That timing difference is the entire value of formative assessment: not the quiz itself, but how quickly the signal gets back to a student while the material is still in front of them, and how quickly a misunderstood concept gets back to the lecturer before it shows up in the final results.
Done well, the loop is short: build a check in minutes, deliver it in the LMS or directly to students, get results back immediately for the objective items, and use the cohort pattern to decide what to revisit next session, not after the exam.
Nothing has to be rebuilt later
The other reason formative assessment gets skipped is that it feels disconnected from the exam that actually counts: separate system, separate item bank, effort that doesn't carry forward. When the questions written for a weekly quiz live in the same bank as the questions written for the final paper, that's no longer true: an item that worked well formatively can be scrambled and secured for a summative sitting later, instead of being rewritten from scratch.
Institutions don't need lecturers to do more. They need the low-stakes checks that already prove useful to stop costing more effort than they return, so the habit survives past week three of the term.
