Authoring

The lecturer writes the assessment.
Nobody else has to be involved.

Assessment Studio is where every Tomax assessment is written: a Tuesday quiz or a final exam, in the same tool. Build it, set the rules, publish it. No admin ticket, no scheduling request, no training course.

Formative and high-stakes in one tool · Items reusable across sittings

Assessment Studio

From Blank Page to Live

Three moves, one sitting at your desk

The tool is judged on one thing: whether a lecturer can get an assessment live between lectures.

1

Write or pull the questions

Draft items directly, or pull existing ones from your personal bank or the institutional bank in TomaBank.

2

Set the rules

Marks, attempts, timing, feedback release, and which integrity measures apply, all on the assessment itself.

3

Publish it

Live in Tomax or inside the LMS. Low-stakes work needs no approval; high-stakes papers route to the reviewer.

Scoring rules set once, applied to everyone

How an item is worth marks is part of the item, not something a marker decides later. That is what makes marking consistent and results defensible.

  • Marks and weighting per item and per section
  • Partial credit, and negative marking where policy allows
  • Rubrics attached to written items, visible to markers and returnable to students
  • Accepted answers, tolerances, and synonyms defined at authoring time
  • Feedback written once at authoring and released automatically after submission
Scoring rules
Write Once

Nothing you write is spent

Items written in Studio go into TomaBank. A question drafted for a formative quiz can be pulled into next year’s final paper, scrambled and secured, without being rewritten.

Personal bank

Your own items, private until you choose to share them.

Institutional bank

Curated, approved items available across the department.

Versioning

Edit an item without breaking the sittings that already used it.

Performance history

See how an item behaved before you put it in a real paper.

Reuse through TomaBank

Autonomy for the lecturer, oversight for the institution

The reason formative assessment dies is that everything routes through an administrator. The reason high-stakes exams need care is that nothing should. Studio draws the line by stakes.

The lecturer publishes directly

Low stakes

  • Create and publish without an admin request
  • Unlimited attempts and instant feedback if you want them
  • Results visible to the lecturer immediately
  • Ungraded or lightly weighted, at your discretion

Approval and custody apply

High stakes

  • Named review and approval before the paper is sealed
  • The approved version locked as the single source
  • Scrambling, lockdown, and identity checks applied by policy
  • Every edit and approval on the audit record

Common questions

No. The same tool authors a weekly quiz and a final exam. What changes is the rules attached to it: approval, scrambling, lockdown, and custody apply to high-stakes papers and not to low-stakes ones.
