Reichman University's Medical School

Enhances Exam Integrity with Tomax's Moodle Plugin

Reichman University's Medical School

Reichman University's Faculty of Medicine, also known as the Dina Recanati School of Medicine, is a new and ambitious academic institution set to welcome its first cohort in 2025. With a mission to address doctor shortages, the faculty will train approximately 160 students annually through a curriculum that combines hands-on clinical instruction from day one, medical simulation, and telemedicine. Given the high stakes of medical education, ensuring the integrity of student assessments, especially in online environments, remains a critical priority.

The Challenge

As part of a modern university ecosystem, the Faculty of Medicine needed to ensure academic integrity during online exams while working within some tight operational constraints:

Established Institutional Workflows

The university had already built custom systems for exam appeals and administration within Moodle, their central Learning Management System (LMS). Moving away from Moodle would mean significant disruption.

Faculty Familiarity

Lecturers were already using Moodle for assessments and were resistant to adopting new platforms or tools.

High Standards for Integrity

As a medical school, the faculty required advanced lockdown and proctoring capabilities to ensure fairness, security, and trust in their examination processes.

The challenge was clear: how to enhance exam integrity without disrupting existing systems, retraining staff, or abandoning developed workflows.

The Solution

Working closely with Reichman University's team, Tomax's LMS integrity plugin was deployed to bring secure lockdown and proctoring capabilities into the Moodle environment without requiring a full system migration. Key aspects of the solution included:

Embedded Secure Environment

Exams within Moodle were locked down to prevent access to unauthorised materials or external applications during assessments.

Seamless User Experience

Rather than redirecting students to a new system, exams were presented in a secure overlay within Moodle, maintaining a familiar interface for both students and faculty.

Advanced Proctoring Tools

Continuous screen recording to deter and detect academic dishonesty, with real-time webcam monitoring to verify student identity and behavior.

Administrative Oversight

Exam administrators and lecturers were given access to live monitoring dashboards, enabling them to pause exams, issue warnings, or flag suspicious behavior, all from within the same environment.

Compatibility with Existing Systems

The solution preserved integration with Reichman's custom-built exam appeals process, ensuring a consistent and unified academic experience.

Overcoming Limitations of Traditional Lockdown Browsers

The solution resolved key pain points commonly associated with traditional web lockdown browsers, such as stability, user experience, and integrity breaches.

The Results

Preserved Academic Integrity

The faculty gained robust proctoring capabilities that met the high standards expected in medical education.

Minimal Disruption

Faculty and administrative staff continued using Moodle without needing to learn a new system.

Unified Workflow

Integration respected the university's existing custom processes, avoiding rework and preserving institutional investments.

Scalable for Future Growth

The solution was designed to scale as the faculty grows, supporting additional students and examination formats over time.

Conclusion

By integrating secure proctoring capabilities directly within Moodle, Reichman University's Faculty of Medicine successfully ensured the integrity of online assessments without compromising on user experience or operational efficiency.

This approach enabled the institution to deliver on its academic mission with confidence, supporting both faculty and students as they prepare for the future of healthcare education.
