Inside Smart Defense: How We Verify Understanding, Not Just Catch Cheating

Every "AI-proofing" conversation eventually gets to the same objection: won't this just mean more work for lecturers, on top of everything else? It was the first constraint we designed Smart Defense around, and it shaped almost every decision in how the feature actually works.

Three steps, no new grading pass

A lecturer adds a defense step to any assignment or exam. Nothing about how the assessment is written or delivered has to change. When a student submits, they're asked to explain their reasoning in their own words, inside the same secure exam environment they're already in. That response arrives alongside the submission, so a lecturer reviews both together and replies with targeted feedback, instead of grading twice.

That ordering matters more than it looks. If defending your work happened in a separate system, at a separate time, it would compete with grading time instead of feeding into it. Because it's part of the same submission record, it doesn't.

What actually gets captured

A defense response is short by design: a spoken or written explanation, not a second exam. What we store alongside it is what makes it useful later: a verified identity, a timestamp, and the student's own words, all attached to the same session as the submission itself.

That combination is the point. A similarity score describes a document. A defense response describes a person's understanding, at a specific moment, that faculty and, where necessary, an academic integrity committee can go back and review directly.

Built to extend past the exam hall

Because it isn't tied to lockdown browsers or a proctored session, a defense step works on take-home assignments and coursework, not just invigilated exams, which is where a large share of the AI-authorship problem actually shows up. Proctoring secures the conditions of an exam; Smart Defense verifies the understanding behind the work, wherever that work was produced.

Most institutions we work with start with one control and add the other once the first is embedded. Neither replaces the other; they answer different questions, and increasingly, both need answering.
